WILFRED MEREDITH, JR.

Wilfred Meredith, Jr. transitioned from this life on Monday, August 22, 2022, at the age of 83. He was a native of Westwego, LA and a resident of Marrero, LA. Billy, as he was affectionately known to close family and friends, was a graduate of L. B. Landry High School. He continued his studies at Iowa State University, where he played on the football team for 3 years. After graduating from Iowa State University in 1962, he enlisted in the United States Army. For his bravery he received numerous commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal for sharpshooting. Upon completion of his military service, Wilfred was employed as a construction traffic control coordinator with ALCOA (Aluminum Company of America). He was responsible for all transportation matter pertaining to Warrick County construction program. His concern about the direction and future of African American youth, lead him in later years to become a corrections officer with the Louisiana Training Institute. Wilfred devoted time, energy, mentorship, and shared wisdom with the youth and staff he supervised until his retirement. Devoted father of Nicole Renee Meredith. Beloved son of the late Wilfred Meredith, Sr. and Albertha Jacobs-Meredith. Grandson of the late Phillip and Louise Meredith, Johnny Jacobs, Sr. and Florence Jacobs. Brother of the late Ronald and Larry Meredith. Loving godfather of Marsha Ponson; also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. The family would like to express a special thank you to the doctors and staff of Ochsner ER, Ochsner Hospital, and Ochsner Rehabilitation Hospital in Jefferson; Chateau Living Center in Kenner; and Passages Hospice in New Orleans for their care, kindness, support, and love.  Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service at DAVIS MORTUARY SERVICE, 230 MONROE STREET GRETNA, LA on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at 9:00a.m. Pastor Leander Johnson of Historic True Vine Baptist Church (Westwego, LA), officiating. Visitation will begin at 8:00a.m. until service time at the parlor. DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC ATTENDANCE WILL BE LIMITED. IT IS MANDATORY EVERYONE ENTERING THE MORTUARY WEAR A FACE MASK OR SOME TYPE OF FACE COVERING.
