VERNITA JOHNSON GAINES

Vernita Johnson Gaines, age 82, entered peacefully into eternal rest at her residence on Monday, March 13, 2023. She was a native of Vacherie, LA and a resident of Gretna, LA. Vernita   was a retired cook at Stumpf Luncheonette and a utility analyst at Gretna Senior Center. She loved singing and praising the Lord, which lead her to attend her church and several other churches every Sunday. She will be remembered for her famous crawfish rice.  Beloved wife of the late Lawrence Gaines, Sr. Devoted mother of Steven (Marilyn) Johnson, Carolyn Geary, Lynette Johnson, Lawrence (Malinda) Gaines, Jr., Eric (Barbara) Gaines, and the late Tyrone and Marilyn Brignac. Stepmother of the late Beverly Dunn. Grandmother of the late Kendri Phillips and Eric Johnson. Daughter of the late Rebecca Favorite Bright. Sister of Elizabeth Paul, Rebecca Green of California, Stephanie Mouton of Georgia, Freddie (Pat) Young of South Carolina, and the late Ernest Favorite, Lawrence Favorite and Elton Johnson. Close cousin of Tammy Brown. Sister-in-law of the late Clarence Paul and Pearl Favorite. Also left to cherish her memories are her best friend Josephine Hartman, 19 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren 4 great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.  Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of Sunrise Baptist Church and all neighboring churches; members of The Golden Voices, Martin Luther King Task Force, and Westside Baptist Association; employees of Rouses of Gretna and United States Postal Service are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Sunrise Baptist Church, 1325 Lebeouf St. Gretna, LA on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at 10:00a.m. Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the church.
