SANDRA HUGHES COLLINS

Sandra Elaine Hughes Collins, age 66, transitioned peacefully on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at Ochsner Medical Center Westbank surrounded by her loved ones. She was a native and resident of New Orleans, LA Sandra was a 1974 graduate O. Perry Walker High School. She continued her studies at Meadows Draughton College, where she received a diploma for Executive Secretary. Sandra also attended Southern University of Baton Rouge and earned at Bachelor of Science Degree in Food Nutrition in 1979. She was employed for 25 years at Charity Hospital as a dietician supervisor. In later years she returned to school and earned certification in education, then began a teaching career in Orleans Parish Public School System. After teaching several years in Orleans Parish, she gained employment with the Jefferson Parish Public School Systems, from which she retired. Sandra was also active with the Royal Ambassadors Music Ensemble and DeVille Ladies. Beloved wife of 41 years to Nathaniel Collins, Sr. Loving mother of Kenneth Henry Collins and the late Nathaniel Collins, Jr. Daughter of the late Joseph, Sr. and Ruth Anderson Hughes. Devoted sister of Gail Hughes, Richard (Brenda) Lloyd, Peter (Ciglenda), Vera, and Rodney, Sr. (Nelda) Hughes, Evelyn Peterson, Annie Mae Schaeffers, and the late Harold Lloyd, Irma Henry, Melvin, Rev. Joseph, Jr., Calvin, Henry, Jerry, and Phillip Hughes, Sr, Augustine Butler, and Joyce McGinnis. Daughter-in-law of the late Henry, Jr. and Ruth Collins. Sister-in-law of Rosemary Lee Hughes, Nathaniel McGinnis, Michelle Hughes, Thelma Turnbull, McClain (Sally), Herbert, Carl, Calvert (Sharon), and Imogene Collins, and the late Rosemary Clark Hughes, Norman Butler, Riley Peterson, West Schaeffers, Clifford, Earl, and Wilbert Collins. Also cherishing her memories are godchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, First Free Mission Baptist Church of Algiers, and all neighboring churches are invited to attend the Funeral Service at First Free Mission Baptist Church of Algiers, 426 Lamarque Street, New Orleans, LA on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 10:00a.m. Pastor Derrick Edmond, host pastor; Pastor Orin D. Grant, Sr., officiating. Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the above-named church.
