REV. LEON HANNIBAL, SR.

Rev. Leon Hannibal, Sr., age 94, transitioned to his heavenly home on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home. He was a native of Winterville, LA (West Baton Rouge) and a resident of Marrero, LA. Rev. Hannibal spent his formative years on a farm, learning the value of hard work and commitment to family. He enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served his country on active duty for 2 years and in the Army Reserves for 8 years. As a self-made man, he used the skills he learned growing up on a farm, his military experience, his talent as a mathematician, and his entrepreneurial spirit to start his own business in 1956. He was the owner and operator of Quality Fence, a chain link fence company, which served the New Orleans Metropolitan area for over 50 years. In 1971, he gave his life to Christ and was called to the ministry. He attended Union National Theological Seminary in New Orleans, and was ordained in 1973 by the Freedmen Association. Rev. Hannibal served as an Assistant Pastor at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in New Orleans under the leadership of Rev. W. M. Gaines, for approximately 23 years. He transferred his membership in 1993 to Holy Hill Baptist Church, serving as an Associate Minister, under the leadership of Pastor James Harkless. Following the death of Pastor Harkless, Rev. Hannibal was elected Pastor of Holy Hill Baptist Church. He was installed as Senior Pastor of Holy Hill Baptist Church by Westside Missionary Baptist Association on July 7, 1995. Rev. Hannibal was a generous philanthropist and under his leadership the church prospered. He pastored Holy Hill Baptist Church for many years until physically unable to attend. Rev. Hannibal will be remembered as a Pastor, Minister, and Teacher. Beloved husband of the late Mae Ella Pryor Hannibal and Jessie Mae Ford Hannibal. Devoted father of Leon, Jr., Kenneth, Donald, Sherman, Joycelyn, Damon, Wanda, and the late Michael Hannibal. Loving grandfather of Michael, Jr., Jeremy, Ryan, Kawana, Kenya, Kendra, Jordyn, Terrell, Javon, Ajeahnell, Miah, and Lyndsey. Son of the late Wilson, Sr. and Mary Hannibal. Brother of the late Wilson, Jr., Helena, Lillian, Nettie, Mable, Helen, Vera, and Willie Mae. Also left to cherish his memories are 15 great grandchildren, his Holy Hill Church family, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of Holy Hill Baptist Church and all neighboring churches; members of Westside Missionary Baptist Association and Freedmen Missionary Baptist General Association are invited to attend the Wake Service at Holy Hill Baptist Church, 1409 Manhattan Blvd. Harvey, LA on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 7:00p.m. Viewing will begin at 3:00p.m. until service time. Dismissal Service will be on Friday, August 5, 2022, at 10:00a.m., Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m.  Interment: Restlawn Park Cemetery-Avondale, LA.
