Monya Butler, age 60, a New Orleans native, peacefully returned to God on Monday, June 16, 2025, at West Jefferson Medical Center. Monya was a 1982 graduate of O. Perry Walker Sr. High School. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (formerly USL), where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree. With a profound love for music, she was a member of her high school band, where she played the flute, and during her college years, she was a dedicated member of the Gospel Choir, forging lifelong friendships and cherishing her experiences at USL. Immediately following graduation, Monya relocated to Atlanta, GA, where she resided for over thirty years. She dedicated her professional life to the Georgia Department of Transportation, State Farm Insurance, and the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). Monya was a faithful member of Anointed Word Evangelistic Tabernacle COGIC, for over 20 years. She served diligently as the office administrator for over 15 years and coordinated the Armor Bears Team for the first lady. In 2019, driven by her love and longing for family, Monya moved back to New Orleans. She was an avid Saints fan, who proudly wore her Saints jersey every football Sunday. Monya found joy in playing card games, reading, singing and crocheting. She will be remembered for peculiar sense of humor and her appreciation for the “wicked humor” of her relatives. Beloved daughter of the late Norman, Sr. and Augustine butler. Loving sister of Monique Butler, Isaac Butler, and the late Norman Butler, Jr. Doting aunt of N’Dia Stroy and Zonathan Butler. Devoted niece of Rosemary Hughes, Vera Hughes, Anna Shaeffers, Evelyn Peterson, Gail H. Fleming, Peter (Ciglenda), and Rodney (Nelda) Hughes. Also cherishing her memories are a host of cousins, lifelong friends, and acquaintances. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Davis Mortuary Service, 230 Monroe Street, Gretna, LA on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 10:00a.m. To view and sign the guestbook, please go to www.davismortuaryservice.com.
