Minnie Pearl Hughes Meridith, 83, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, entrepreneur, and lifelong woman of faith, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. A native of Mississippi and longtime resident of Louisiana, Minnie was the founder of Minnie Pearl Pies, established in 1988 after she followed a divine calling: “Make pies—people gon’ always eat.” Her sweet potato pies became a local staple, earning her the distinction of being the first non-mass-produced bakery to appear in gas stations and supermarkets across the region, beginning with Danny & Clyde’s Food Mart in 1991. She was later selected as the exclusive sweet potato pie vendor for Super Bowl XLVII. For over 15 years, she served as a cherished vendor at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Essence Festival, Zulu Lundi Gras Festival, Audubon Nature Institute Festivals, and numerous other events. Her motto, “The Sweetest and the Best Pies This Side of Heaven,” reflected both her product and her spirit. Beloved wife of the late Eddie Meridith, Jr. Devoted mother of Van Michael Hughes, Eddie (Jacquelyn) Meridith, III, Gwendy (Tyrone) Robinson, and Candrassar (Willie) Wilson. Daughter of the late Henry and Elma Hughes. Loving sister of Mildred Berry, Cassandra Thompson, and the late Gene and Louis Hughes. Also cherishing her memories are 7 grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of The Whole Family Church, Holy Hill Baptist Church, True Hope Ministries, New Zion Christian Family Worship Center and neighboring churches are invited to attend the Celebration of Life at New Zion Christian Family Worship Center, 5040 Taravella Road, Marrero, LA on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10:00a.m. Pastor Carnell Bridges, host pastor; Pastor Daniel Walker, officiating.
