MELVIN COLLINS, JR.

Melvin Collins, Jr., affectionately known as “Poppy” or “Melly Mel”, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at the age of 79. He was a native of New Orleans, LA and a resident of Harvey, LA. Melvin was a proud graduate of George Washington Carver High School and honorably served his country in the United States Army. Melvin was an employee of the Regional Transit Authority until his retirement in 2003 and the Port of New Orleans until 2019. Beloved husband of 36 years to the late Joycelyn M. Mitchell Collins. Devoted father of Andrew S. (Sharon) Williams, Jr., Shuwana W. (Rodney) Harness, Michael T. (Lisa) Collins, and Nicole Collins Jenkins. Loving grandfather of Brandon M. Brooks, Amber S. Olds, Andrew S. Williams III, Nylah M. Richardson, Ashleigh N. Harness, Michael Collins,Jr., Chandler A. Williams, Kevin A. Jenkins, Jr., Lauren E. Williams, Laila A. Williams, Laci A. Williams, and Jaylin J. Collins. Great grandfather of Brayden Simmons, Karsen Olds, Owen Olds, and Averie R. Williams. Son of the late Melvin Collins, Sr. (Lateef Muhammad) and Ollie Riley Collins. Brother of Rodney (Sharon) Collins, Kenneth (Donna) Collins, Janice Collins, Sondra Collins Fazande, and Deborah Collins Larkins. Melvin is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officer and members of Come Into the Light Ministries, Macedonia Baptist Church, and all neighboring churches; employees of the Port of New Orleans, Boeing Aerospace/NASA, Entergy Corporation, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), Nasa Michoud Assembly Facility/Chenega Global Protection, Federal Reserve Bank, and Triple G. Trucking Co. are invited to attend the Celebration of Life at Davis Mortuary Service, 6820 Westbank Expressway, Marrero, LA on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 10:00a.m. Pastor Albert C. Mickel, officiating. Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the parlor. Interment: Westlawn Cemetery-Gretna, LA.
