LEONA MATTHEWS HURLIC

Leona Matthews Hurlic was called home to be with our Heavenly Father on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at the age of 72.  She was a native and a lifelong resident of New Orleans, LA. Leona was a trailblazer for women at the Avondale Shipyard of New Orleans. She became one of the first female welders and first-class pipefitter for the shipyard. Loving mother of Tonia Matthews (Joseph)Washington, Theresa Matthews (Tommy) Gilmore, Tracy Matthews (Kevin) Darensbourg, Lisa (Khdafi) Matthews, Edward (Deatrice) Matthews, and Lamont (Anterikananda) Matthews. Daughter the late Clarence Matthews and Norma Ducro Matthews. Sister of Charles Matthews, Clarence Matthews, Louis, Matthews, Dennis (William) Matthews, Sanchez Matthews, Doris Matthews Parker, and the late Norma Matthews, Callie Mae Matthews Simmons, Sandra Matthews McLaughlin, and Elaine Matthews Williams. Sister-in-law of the late Lewellen Cook (Lucy)Matthews, also survived by 20 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends of the family also pastors, officers, and members of St. Stephen Baptist Church and neighboring churches are invited to attend the Funeral Services at St. Stephen Baptist Church 1738 L. B. Landry Ave. New Orleans, LA. on Friday, September 23, 2022, at 1:00p.m.
