June Marie Shelton Matthews departed this life peacefully on Friday, June 27, 2025, at the age of 92. She was a native of New Orleans, LA and a resident of Marrero, LA.
June devoted her life to caring for others as a professional caregiver for over 50 years. She brought compassion, patience, and love into every home she entered. Her clients became family, and her kindness touched countless hearts.
June loved cooking big dinners, shopping, listening to gospel music, and tending to her garden. June was an active and faithful member of Pentecost Baptist Church in New Orleans, Louisiana. She served proudly on the Deaconess Board and was honored to be crowned Queen of Pentecost. Beloved wife of the late Willie Matthews. Devoted mother of Opal (David) O’Neal, Dwight (Sherry) Matthews, Rosanna (Ronnie) Gooden, Marribell “Jeannie” (Michael) Thiel), Cornell “John” (Naisha) Matthews, Ricky (Georgetta) Matthews, Sr., Keith (Keisha) Grear, Sr. and the late Michael Matthews. Daughter of the late Harold Shelton Sr. and Reverend Marribell Shelby Shelton. Sister of Zadie Ray, Cornelious Shelton, and the late Rev. Gloria Richardson, Marribell DeWitt, Harold Shelton, Mahalia Foy, and Timothy Shelton. Devoted friend of Josephine Thomas, also survived by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Relatives and friends of the family also pastors, officers, and members of Pentecost Baptist Church and neighboring churches are invited to attend the Celebration of Life at Pentecost Baptist Church 1510 Harrison Ave. New Orleans, LA on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 10:00a.m. Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the church.
