JOAN MARIE WASHINGTON SURGENT

Joan Marie Washington Surgent departed this life peacefully on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at the age of 63. She was a native of New Orleans, LA and a former resident of Avondale, LA, and presenting residing in Zachary, LA. Joan was a graduate of John H. Martyn High School, and she attended the University of Phoenix.  "Joanie", as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was a retired accountant with the Ochsner Workers Compensation Department of New Orleans. Beloved wife of 39 years to Montrel Surgent, Sr. Loving mother of Nikita Pierre and Montrel Surgent, Jr. Stepmother of Keisha Bruce. Grandmother of Montrel Surgent, III, Angel, and Allison Bruce.  Daughter of the late John Rubit and Ethel Mae Washington. Granddaughter of the late Samuel Washington, Jr. and Beatrice Smith. Sister of Terrance Washington, Charmaine Washington, Adrian Kelly, Iris Ponson, Marie Sigler, Joan (Nelson) Michelle, Pearl Ann Rubit, and the late Anasthesia Marie Johnson, JoAnn and Lavina Rubit. Aunt of the late Darius Johnson and Consuella Washington. Great aunt of the late De’Vonte Lewis. Niece of the late Louise Weber.  Daughter-in-law of Joyce Patterson and the late Leroy Surgent. Sister in law of Donna Gage. Devoted friend of Sharon Simmons, Delynn (Dee-Dee) Bell, and Sonya Walker. Cousin of the late Arthur Weber, Jr., also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of True Vine Baptist Church, and neighboring churches are invited to attend the funeral service at True Vine Baptist Church, 249 Sala Ave. Westwego, LA on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 10:00a.m. Pastor Leander Johnson officiating. Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the above-named church. Interment: Woodlawn Park Memorial Cemetery-Westwego, LA.
