Gloria Jean Batiste transitioned peacefully to be with the Lord at JoEllen Smith Living Center on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the age of 69. She was a native of Pineville, LA and a resident of New Orleans, LA. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, SUNO and UNO where she received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. She had degrees in Music, Education and Mathematics. She was employed by Orleans Parish Schools, the Recovery School District, and Travis Hill Nola Charter School. She was a dedicated teacher for 42 years. She was an active member of Second Zion Baptist Church #1 where she served in the youth choir, young adult choir, adult and mass choir. Beloved mother of Jonnay Burkes (Calvin) Rucker, and Dallas Whitney Blade. Loving grandmother of Carter Rucker, Jolie Rucker, Jaxen Rucker, and Calvin Rucker, III. Daughter of the late Etta Burks. Adopted daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Israel Batiste. Sister of Brenda Bradley, Nora Ann Blackman, Darlene Harris, and the late Linda Jones, and Sandra Blackman, also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of Second Zion Baptist Church #1 and all neighboring churches are invited to attend the Celebration of Life at Second Zion Baptist Church # 1, 2929 Second St. New Orleans, LA, on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 10:00a.m. Pastor Derek Webb, Sr. officiating.
