ESSIE LEE MATTHEWS

Essie Lee Matthews transitioned to her heavenly home at Touro Infirmary on Sunday, April 2, 2023, at the age of 94. She was a native of Jackson, LA and a resident of New Orleans, LA. She resided in Calliope Housing Development for 40 years. Essie was a faithful member of Pure Light Baptist Church for 67 years and was crowned queen in 1983. Throughout her life, Essie was known for her lavish style, sassy walk, and extravagant hats. Loving mother of Edward (Bobbie) Matthews, Lawrence (Ruth) Matthews, Sr., Calvin (Linda) Payne, Essie (Bobby) Richmond, and the late Leonard (Charlene) Payne. Daughter of the late Leonard and Viola Matthews. Sister of Laura Jackson and the late Roosevelt and Willie Matthews. Essie is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 3 nephews, and a host of great grandchildren, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers, and members of Pure Light Baptist church and neighboring churches; residents of Fischer Senior Village are invited to attend the Celebration of Life at Pure Light Baptist Church, 3944 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. New Orleans, LA on Friday, April 14, 2023, at 10:00a.m. Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the church.
