ELIGHT CHARLES, SR.

Elight “Elijah” Charles, Sr., age 77, entered into eternal rest at West Jefferson Medical Center on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 10:31p.m., following a brief illness. He was a native of Glen Allen, MS and a resident of Louisiana for more than 60 years. Elijah, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, was a retired employee of Avondale Shipyard, and a former employee of the City of Gretna. Loving father of Cheryl A. Turner, Elijah Jr., and Ryan Charles. Son of the late Will Charles, Sr. and Lummie Harvey.  Grandson of the late Joe Phillips and Mittie Coleman. Brother of Mary Charles, Addie (Elester) Scott of Trenton, SC, and the late Will Jr., Hal, Lloyd, Joe Louis, David, Joshua, and Albert Charles, Ollie Mae Wilson, Wil F Coakley, and Annie Mae Williams. Nephew of Ed Willie Coleman of Glen Allen, MS. Elight is also survived by his supportive former wife Timothy Wilson, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also pastors, officers and members of Historic St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church and neighboring churches; employees of Good Samaritan Nursing Rehabilitation, Ochsner Medical Center Westbank, McDonald’s Restaurant, and Apex Home Health South are invited to attend the Funeral Service at New Zion Christian Family Worship Center, 4050 Taravella Rd. Marrero, LA on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 10:00a.m. Visitation will begin at 8:30a.m. until service time at the church.
