Carey John “Fatz” Thomas, age 68, entered peacefully into eternal rest at his residence on Thursday, October 1, 2026. He was a native of New Orleans, LA and a resident of Terrytown, LA. “Fatz,” as he was affectionately known to family and friend, was a proud 1976 graduate of St. Augustine High School, who was a true Purple Knight. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army, and received several commendation for his service, including the Marksman Badge with M16 Rifle, Sharpshooter Badge, and Good Conduct Medal. Following his military service, Carey attended Delgado Community College. He was employed as a Deputy with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, from which he retired after many years of dedicated service. Carey’s favorite pastimes where fishing, cooking and eating good Louisiana Cuisine. He was also an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #12, All Saints Men of Vision, the Forest Club, and Isaiah 43. Carey was a former member of Xavier Prep High School Dad’s Club. Beloved husband of 42 years to Vanessa Porter Thomas. Devoted father of Essence Keiloda Thomas. Son of the late Eugene F. Thomas, Sr. and Gloria Mae Joseph Thomas. Grandson of the late Minor and Amelia Joseph, Joseph and Alice Verette Thomas. Loving brother of Larry (Genny) Thompson, Lana T. (the late Marion) Harrington of Hope Mills, NC, and the late Eugene F. Thomas, Jr. and Gladys T. Billy. Son-in-law of Alice L. Porter. Brother-in-law of Kenneth (Cindy) Porter and Terry (the late Brenda) Porter. Carey is also survived by 2 godchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Relatives and friends of the family, also priest and parishioners of All Saints Catholic Church and St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, pastors, officers, and members of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, St. Paul Baptist Church and all neighboring churches; alumni of St. Augustine High School; employees of Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson Parish Public School System, NAMI SELA, and RHD Mobile Crisis Unit are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at All Saints Catholic Church, 1441 Teche Street, New Orleans, LA on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 11:30a.m. Visitation will begin at 9:30a.m, until service time at the church.
