BETTY JEAN BOWMAN SANDERS

Elder Betty “Bennie” Jean Bowman Sanders departed this earthly life on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at the age of 84. She was a native of Utica, MS and a resident of Marrero, LA. Betty graduated from Lincoln High School in Marrero, LA. She earned an Early Childhood Education Associate Degree at Southern University at New Orleans. Betty was a retired educator of over 30 years, with the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB).  She was a proud member of the United Teachers of New Orleans (UTNO) for over 20 years. She always considered her greatest professional achievement to be that of opening the young minds of special education students, severe & multiple disability students, and disabled youth to the various joys of learning. Elder Betty gave her life to the LORD at an early age and lived the rest of her days to bring glory to GOD. Throughout her years of worshipping and serving the LORD, she passionately accepted the spiritual call to Elder Ship. Under the tutelage of her brother, the late Pastor Remus Bowman Sr., she continued to mature in her walk as she faithfully accepted the call to Mothership, as the elected church Mother of her final church home, New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Devoted wife of the late John H. Sanders Jr. Beloved mother of Patrice Smith, Antoine (Tracy) Sanders, Stephanie Temple of Austin, TX, Michael (Derrick) Smith, Jacquelyn Sanders of Austin, TX, Nathaniel (Yulonda) Sanders of Austin, TX, Shantella (Sam Sr.) Martin, Nicquolette (Darrel Sr.) Parker, and the late John H. Sanders, III, and Judith D. Sanders. Godmother of Patricia Bowman. Grandmother of LaShetta (Charles) Ballet, Jonne Sanders, AnJowana Charles, Antoine Smith, Antonyia & Asian Bickham, Jondreika Johnson, Juannika (Donnell) Miller, Jamika (Robert) Scott, Tevis (Renee) Sanders Sr., of Austin, TX, Titus (LaNasha) Sanders, Jefferson (Aramis) Thomas Jr. of Austin, TX, Rachel, Chidi & Leah Beatrice Ugoala of Austin, TX, Chinasa (Colin) Veney of Tempe, AZ, Jecovi Taylor & Destiney Sanders of Austin, TX, Dwayne Brown Jr, DeJohn Brown Sr., Samiyah, Samsun, Samanii and Sam Martin Jr., Semaj, London, Darrel, Jr. and the late John H. Great-Great Grandmother of Shamari, Key’Mai, Ty’Jay, Ja’Sani, Zaire, Rashad, Jr., Kennedy, John, Kiah, and Trevian, Jr. Daughter of the late Frellie, Sr and Beatrice Bowman. Sister of the late Remus Bowman Sr., Robert Bowman & Frellie Bowman Jr., Adelle Newton, Bessie Davis, Leola Bailey, Myrtis Rice, Mary Miles & Ruby Nell Herrington. Mother-in-law of the late Cheryl Sanders and Charlie Temple, Sr., also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. A Pre-Celebration of Life Wake Service will be hosted by her home church, New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church 603 General Taylor St. New Orleans, LA on Friday, January 20, 2023, at 6p.m. Celebration of Life will be held at St. Stephen's Baptist Church 1738 L. B. Landry Ave. New Orleans, LA on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 11:00Aa.m.
